Glimpses of Goa

Markets

Goa's markets are absolutely unmissable experience for both first-time and regular Goa visitors. They are a whirl of colour and activity and assured surprises.

The markets are of two kinds – the local markets and the flea markets. The local markets are characterised by mounds of fresh produce and heaps of aromatic spices as well as Goan indispensables like dried fish and dried shrimp.

The Saturday Night Bazaar exudes a carnival atmosphere, and features an intriguing mix of local wares sold alongside the creations of foreigners, some of who have turned semi-residents of Goa.

All manner of personal and household articles vie with one another for the attention of the visitor – from items of clothing for every existing body part (including collectibles like a genuine Playboy bikini!) to beautifully embroidered, mirror-studded backpack and carry bags, to intricately carved walnut wood bowls and trays, to meditation hammocks, antique telephones and gramophones.

Also being hocked are all manner of personal embellishments like dreadlock parlours, shiatsu massages and ear cleaning sessions. Live entertainment includes a feisty band and a sinuous belly dancer bedecked in blue-sequined finery.

A cornucopia of food stalls on standby ensure ample energy to explore all on offer. The range of food available is a pan-universal melange – from jacket potatoes with the wonted assortment of toppings and ambrosia organic farm carrot cake and whole-wheat rolls to tuna sushi rolls and the Mediterranean representations of souvlaki and tzatziki.

A daytime version of the Saturday Night Bazaar is the Anjuna Flea Market on Wednesdays.
